5 Benefits Of Couples Counseling

As a couples counselor and marriage therapist, I know how important it is to invest in your relationship.  But I also understand that couples counseling is a big commitment, especially if you’re not sure it will help your marriage.

If you’re considering couples counseling, here are five benefits you can expect.

#1: Couples counseling will strengthen your relationship.  Studies have shown that friendship is the key to sustaining a healthy, happy marriage.  However, too many couples put their friendship on the back burner.  They struggle to prioritize their relationship and stop making time to connect. Regardless of whether your relationship is strong or struggling, couples counseling can help you reconnect with your partner and strengthen your bond.

#2: Couples counseling will help you and your partner work through your challenges before they become problems. Unfortunately, many of the couples I see in my office seek couples therapy when they’re really struggling in their relationship. They wait until minor challenges become big problems before seeking help, and these big problems often take much longer to repair. Couples counseling can help you resolve minor issues in your relationship before they cause damage to your marriage.

#3: Couples counseling will improve your communication skills.  Whether you consider yourself a skilled communicator or someone who struggles to connect, everyone can benefit from practicing new skills.  In couples counseling, you’ll learn new ways to communicate.  That might mean learning specific skills and tools, like how to compromise or how to apologize, or simply strengthen your ability to listen and hear your partner.

#4: Couples counseling will help you shift your focus from what’s wrong with your partner to what’s working in your relationship.  It’s easy to get caught up in the blame game.  So many of the couples I see in my office argue constantly about the things they want to change about their partner. And, while it’s important to address the things that aren’t working in your relationship, it’s also important to celebrate what is. Couples counseling will help you identify your strengths as a couple and teach you how to use those strengths to make things better.

#5: Couples counseling will help you grow.  Couples counseling is about your relationship, but it’s also about you. Your thoughts, feelings, and experiences naturally influence the way you show up in your relationship, for better or for worse.  In couples counseling, you’ll explore your patterns and your past to better understand how they impact your relationship and your partner. Couples counseling will help you learn more about yourself and who you are.

Regardless of where you’re at in your relationship, couples counseling can help your relationship grow stronger.  If you’re interested in learning more about couples counseling, reach out.  I’d love to talk.
